Que significa una galeria que se especializa en pintura figurativa en Argentina? Retratos, gente, manos, caras, paisajes, casas, recuerdos, sueños de otros lados, todo esto se puede encontrar en lo figurativo. En Europa, estas gallerias abarcan desde las aspiraciones de la clase media de pertenecer a algo, hasta escribirse a uno mismo en la historia. En Buenos Aires, un pasado sombrio persiste. Los desaparecidos siempre presentes pero invisibles. Quienes son los desaparecidos? De quien es la culpa? Podria volver a pasar?
Un misionario Irlandes una vez me dijo como los militares desaparecian gente. Me dijo que cuando los militares tomaban a la gente, tambien hacian ventas de liquidacion, vendiendo las vidas de estas personas en cuestion de minutos. Los soldados hacian dinero extra y asi tambien desaparecia cualquier evidencia. Tambien me conto sobre los sacerdotes Palotinos quienes pedian a la gente que no compraran en estas ventas de liquidacion. Ellos tambien desaparecieron en esa guerra SUCIA.
En este contexto, un retrato, interior, una sonrisa o un gesto es mas que un espejo reflejando a uno mismo o mirando hacia otra persona o hacia otro lugar. Como graffiti, la figuracion grita, YO EXISTO! NOSOTROS EXISTIMOS! ACA ESTAMOS! Una mezcla de color y pinceladas, la pintura figurativa alude a la existencia del otro.
Este show hace un uso completo de panoplia de pinturas figurativas: retratos, paisajes, reproducciones de fotos familiares, natureza morte con juguets de niños. El artista habla de una busqueda de hogar, de un deseo de encontrase a uno mismo. Estos lienzos, cortinas, libros, empapelads que ciertamente hablan de un entorno domestico, de un lugar.
Una excavadora parada en una pila de basura y entorno urbano, triunfante como un caballo de guerra pisotenado a sus enemigos. Estas son dos casas de material que debido a los colores se parecen mas a un folleto de agentes inmobiliarios que a un bunker. Entre ellas se encuentra el personaje de Toy Story un Stormtrooper y Capitan America, nuestra imaginacion ahora es propiedad de Disney. INcluso Enzo o Invicivel el niño en la sombra con un palo y globo , sublimada sobre papel tapiz de palmera lleva una camiseta de Capitan America.. Es dificil hacerse la idea del conjunto, ya que las imagenes se despliegan como el instagram de alguien ilustrando una narrativa que uno mismo no posee.
Pero luego paras de correr de una imagen a otra. Y los que hacen que los lienzos se juntoen son los colores audaces: naranjas, verdes claros, y especialmente el rosa que es el color que recorre todo el show. Estos colores se disipan aveces como acuarelas, aveces como manchas sobre un mueble nuevo. Las piezas mas grandes en lienzos y papel Kraft estan echas sobre el sueloo con tinta china, de modo que cuando se cuelgan en la pared, tamblien reflejan esta idea de manchas. Algo que queda de una vida previa, tal vez ese sea el poder que tienen estas pinturas casi sin terminar pero justo lo suficiente como para decir que hay algo aqui. Puedes ver? La pincelada que desea representar un momento de ser, mas que una representacion las marcas seducen a lo que era y lo que sera.
Quien juega con estos juguetes? Que se encuentra detras de esa puerta? Deberia conocer a esas personas? Como Buzz y Woody estas pinturas estan buscando su hogar y donde puedan crear su propia narrativa.

What does a gallery which specialises in figurative painting mean in Argentina? Portraits, people, hands, faces, landscapes, homes, memories, dreams of elsewhere, all this can be found in figuration. In Europe, these galleries cater from middle-class aspirations of being part of something, to write yourself into history. In Buenos Aires a darker past persists. The disappeared ever present but invisible. Who are the gone? Who is to blame? Could it ever happen again?
An Irish missionary told me of how the military disappeared people. He told me that when the the military took people, they also performed a fire sale, liquidating these peoples’ lives in a matter of minutes. The soldiers got some pocket money and effectively ended any possibility for return. He told me of the Palottine priests who asked the people to stop buying from these fire sales. They were disappeared in that dirty war.
In this context a portrait, an interior, a smile or a gesture is more than a mirror reflecting back or looking onto someone else or somewhere else. Like graffiti, figuration screams, I exist! We exist! We were here! A mixture of colour and brushstrokes, figurative painting alludes to the existence of the other.
This show makes full use of the panoply of figurative paintings: portraits, landscapes, reproductions from family photos, still lives with children’s toys. The artist speaks of a quest for home, a desire to find one’s place. These canvas, curtains, books, wallpaper certainly speak of a domestic setting, of a place.
A digger stands in a pile of rubble and urban environment, triumphant like a warhorse trampling its enemies. There are two concrete houses that because of the colours look more like a real estate agents brochure than bunkers. Between them stands the main characters from Toy Story a Stormtrooper and Captain America our imagination now owned by Disney. Even Enzo o Invicivel the shadowy child with a stick and balloon, screen printed on the palm tree wallpaper wears a captain America T-shirt. It’s difficult to get a hold of the whole as the images unfold like someone’s Instagram illustrating a narrative which you don’t have.
Then you stop running from image to image. And what does bring the canvases together is the bold colours: oranges, lime greens and especially the pink which is the colour of the thread used to hang the show. These colours dissipate sometimes like watercolours sometimes like stains on a new piece of furniture. The larger pieces on wallpaper and kraft paper are done on the ground in Chinese ink so when they are stuck to the wall, they too reflect this idea of stains. Something left behind from a previous life, maybe that is the power of these paintings almost unfinished but just enough to say there is something here. Can you see? The brush stroke that desire to represent a moment of being, more than a representation the marks allude to what was and what could be.
Who plays with these toys? What lies behind that door? Who’s are the shadows on the blue wall? Should I know these people? Like Buzz and Woody these paintings are looking for their home where they can create their own narrative.
